Short description
Step into a hidden corner of Istria where fewer than 20 people live — but over 3,000 years of history unfold. On this interpretative walk, explore the ancient hilltop village of Mutvoran — from the prehistoric Histri tribe and early Iron Age walls to a medieval town shaped by the Venetian Republic, where centuries of history have woven timeless stories waiting to be discovered.
Long description
Discover one of Istria’s best-kept secrets — the tiny hilltop village of Mutvoran, where time seems to stand still.
With fewer than 20 residents, this quiet place hides an extraordinary past stretching back more than 3,000 years. On this immersive 75-minute interpretive walk, you’ll explore layers of history shaped by prehistoric settlers, medieval builders, and powerful empires.
We begin at the entrance of this former fortified settlement, once a strategically important “kaštel” overlooking the surrounding landscape. As we walk through its narrow paths, you’ll step into the role of a time detective — uncovering stories from prehistory, the Venetian era, and local traditions that still live on today.
At the old loggia, discover the fascinating Mutvoran bestiary — a collection of symbolic stone carvings depicting pairs of animals. These ancient reliefs reveal a powerful message about balance, human nature, and the timeless struggle between harmony and chaos.
Passing through the town gate, imagine life in the Middle Ages, when Mutvoran was a fortified stronghold with guarded entrances, defensive towers, and constant watch over the valley below.
Walking along the ancient walls, you’ll learn about the prehistoric origins of the site, including dry-stone fortifications that have stood for millennia. This area represents one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the region.
The experience culminates at the Church of St. Mary Magdalene — the spiritual heart of Mutvoran. Hear stories of local traditions, legends, and forgotten customs — including a mysterious wedding wreath once shared by generations of brides.
This walk is more than a tour — it’s a journey through time, symbolism, and silence. A chance to slow down, connect with history, and experience the deeper, hidden side of Istria.
